Job description:

This role will report to the Fabrication Foreman and is an hourly position at SMP Industries, Inc. This individual is responsible for setting up production machines to established quality and production standards. This position will start on 1st shift for a period of time to ensure the proper training prior to being permanently placed on either 1st or 2nd shift. Qualifications:

  • Must have strong metal press forming and basic fabrication background
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a manufacturing environment is strongly desired
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of fabrication, mechanical and hydraulic presses, and or punch operations (including basic setup) 
  • Competent at basic dimensional measuring and able to quickly learn the use of precision measurement tools
  • Demonstrates competency in basic shop math with the ability to read/understand blueprints and other shop drawing aids
  • Ability to work with various types of metal forming constraints with guidance
  • Ability to operate a forklift
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Desire to learn new skills and to improve technical knowledge
  • Strong orientation toward quality, safety, and continuous improvement

Physical Requirements:

  • Lift, carry, push, and or pull 1-50lbs frequently
  • Squat/kneel, bend/stoop, twist/turn, grasp, and reach overhead and outward frequently
  • Sit, stand, and walk for 1-10 hours per day
  • Work in a fast paced industrial environment wearing hearing protection, vision protection, and other appropriate protective clothing

Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate mechanical an or hydraulic press or punch for routine established work
  • Select correct tooling for the job task from setup documents or supervisor/lead assistance
  • Load, install, and correctly set up the tools required with some assistance from supervisor/lead
  • Perform assigned work to time standards and quality expectations
  • Account for time and work completed via online computer data collection system
  • Safely operates a forklift to handle materials and completed work
  • Make routine decisions and use problem solving to resolve basic manufacturing issues or seek assistance
  • Report and document all basic material, production, and quality control issues
  • Maintain performance logbooks on assigned area equipment while reporting deficiencies to the maintenance team
  • Participate in equipment preventative maintenance at the operator level
  • Must be able to set up machines within a given timeline
